At last night’s Council meetings the Cities of South Perth and Melville simultaneously agreed to endorse the Canning Bridge Rail Station Study “Precinct Vision.” This was the culmination of an excellent series of public meetings, community input and conscious development.
This plan is the result of two years of community workshops and consultant design work and has had widespread input from many, many people. This included a joint session of both Councils earlier in the year. The vision for our side of the bridge has a residential flavour; Melville’s is of very mixed- use, including high- rise development, with a town square and central hub.

The City will be advertising details of the plan for your comment in January so be sure to read the details and have your say. Key aspects for South Perth, raised in community forums and addressed in the Vision, include:
- better pedestrian access
- improved links with Curtin University
- some commercial development on Canning Highway, Como
- building of a third bridge and retiring the older structure, possibly for use as community services such as coffee shops on the bridge
- Manning Road southbound access
- greatly improved bus stop arrangements
- kiss ‘n ride facilities
- better all- round traffic arrangements
- foreshore enhancement, with recreation facilities
- allowance for a ferry station
Further details will be released in January. There will be notes on this Blog. Proposed developments will be over many years, and might not commence immediately. Thanks Pete for the info. It would seem that the Applecross side of Canning Bridge will get the refurbishment and all the good stuff, and the Como side of Canning Bridge will get the retail outlets and the parking problems. I hope I am mistaken, but I've got a sinking feeling that Como Beach will get the raw end of the deal. Regards, Janet Reid
Scary!!! SRT on the River Foreshore Assessment identified this as a poor to moderate conditions area and considered to be a priority 1 for management (e.g. renurishment). We need to ensure furture developments have sufficent foreshore setback and environmental values are considered during all this works.

In regards to the Canning Bridge vision we have but ONE important question in relation to where we live –
“How much MORE traffic will be diverted via Ley St from Canning Hyw to Manning Road and Manning Road to Canning Hyw (to the round about at Henley St)”
The volume of traffic and the speed they travel at this stage is extremely unsafe.
I previously asked the City of South Perth Council this same question after our brick wall was knocked down by a speeding motorist and the death of ducks, which cross Ley St from McDougal Park. I received a long winded no meaning response.
Would you please advise us of the consequences of the Canning Bridge Vision and how it will affect the volume of traffic using Ley St as a short cut?
Hello, Can you please help me. I heard in a talk in Sacramento Ca in October that in Perth land use dcisions are made using input from a "jury" of ramdomly picked citizens who are empaneled to speak for the public good, as against the interests of just the neighbors or the developers. Can you give me any info to further research this? Thank you very much, \\
