It’s Friday night in Como. Where shall we go for dinner? Preston Street of course! Sunset view down the hill, sails on the water, a cool drink to hand. Ahh, I love this place.
Now, what can we do to make it even better? What if we encouraged the restaurants to place tables on the pavement, leaving a walkway on the building side? Patrons at Just Tapas, Empress, Coffee at Cygnet, Wild Lime, Golden Mile, Lago di Como and others could enjoy sunset even more.
Then what if we did a bit of engineering and shaped the pavement a bit so tables stood straight? What if the businesses chipped in for the cost? What if we had a bit of gentle street music?
Do you have an idea? If we work with our Council we can do wonders with our City. Click on Comments below or just email me, to have your thoughts published here.

sounds like a great idea!
That sounds good Pete!
That would be great !
Why not work on a pedestrian mall or a go slow area like Angelo Street and Rokeby Road on the lower end or both. A few smarts could fix car access for parking. If the SPCC can design the parking for Mends Street and the proposed center on the point this should be child's play.
Whike you're at it. How about fixing up the smoker's bar outside the Karalee. I have heard a few say that it detracts from the area and they don't like running the gauntlet of the beer garden. I brave the car park myself.
Cheers
I moved into the street 14 years ago. We as Business owners do our bit providing great service, product and ambience within our businesses and the Council needs to beautify the street. We need large green tress and to make use of the unused paving. We welcome all and many works to be done in our Preston Street.
Sounds like the City of South Perth, Councillors and shop owners could get together and work out how to make something happen. We need vibrant centres that attract more people. Just look at how the Atomic Cafe (Mends Street) and Hoopla Cafe in Kensington, along with Whirlwind in Welwyn Avenue, Manning are drawing people in from near and far. How can Preston Street better meet the needs of residents and businesses. Like your suggestions Pete, it is a start. The conversation with everyone is the next stage.
Tables placed directly on the footpath at Preston Street would be on a slope, one might wear their spaghetti rather than eat it.
The idea of al fresco eating there is a good one. It is a shame the council of the day never thought through the issue. Still all things are possible.
What about the Cygnet Theatre in Preston Street? Get it revamped!
And how about train stop at Preston st?
